I'M NEW TO YOGA. ANY SPECIAL TIPS?
Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach; it is suggested you refrain from heavy meals at least two hours prior to practice. If food is a necessity in these prior hours, consider something easily digested such as fruit on an empty stomach, yogurt or a light (ingredient) salad. Fats may make you nauseous.
Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early. Do not plan to arrive the second class has started. Also plan to attend your yoga practice when you can complete the full practice. Avoid being a latecomer or early leaver as these exits/entrances change the energy in the room. Of course, anyone can be late occassionally but please don't be that student who is consistently stepping over everyone when class has begun.
Turn off your cell phone during class. Vibrate is not the answer. If you are waiting for a call, you're not fully present in your practice - and the ringing, buzz or beeping of your phone will disturb the class.
Unless you have a medical condition or special need (hot yoga/dehydrated/headache), leave your water bottle in the cubby. Drinking water during practice will reduce the heat you are building which is valuable in keeping your muscles warm and detoxifying your body. Drink plenty of water post practice
Place your possessions in the cubby. Loose yoga mat bags, keys, flip flops, eye glasses... all are potential for breaking items or falls by student or teacher. Keep the floor safe and use the cubby. Too valuable? Leave it home or get creative in how to carry it.
What if I'm the only student who arrives? Will there be a class? We typically require five students to keep a practice on the schedule. However, if you (and only you) arrive 5 or 10 minutes early and have set up your mat and are preparing to practice, the class will be led (unless you prefer not). If you arrive as the teacher is closing up (in other words you are late or it is the actual practice start time and you are running in the door), the practice will not occur. Classes with consistently low attendance will eventually be cancelled, so if you like a practice, your attendance keeps it on the schedule :)
What if I can't do it? If you can breathe, you can do yoga :) Our teachers will meet you wherever you are on the mat! We welcome you!
